The delegation of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, led by Deputy Head for Digital Development, Digital Transformation and Digitalisation, Sergii Zakharin, participated in the conference “Ukraine’s Organic Sector in the EU Integration Process – Challenges, Opportunities, and Post-War Resilience”, held as part of the BIOFACH 2025 trade fair Congress.
BIOFACH is the largest annual international trade fair in Europe covering the organic food, beverage, and non-food sectors. This year, 24 leading Ukrainian organic exporters are taking part in the event.
The keynote speech on the current state and prospects of organic production in Ukraine, particularly in terms of harmonising the Ukrainian and EU legislation in this area, was delivered by Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
During the panel discussions, Sergii Zakharin noted that, under the instruction of Serhii Tkachuk, Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Ukraine is actively and efficiently working on the latest documents related to state control over food safety and key quality indicators. This includes ensuring timely detection of labelling violations in accordance with legal requirements in the field of organic production, circulation, and labelling of organic products. Additionally, in collaboration with colleagues from other governmental bodies, efforts are underway to implement the new EU organic legislation. Currently, more than 1% of Ukraine’s agricultural land is used for organic farming, and this figure is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Investments in this sector are also increasing annually.
“Ukrainian organic legislation was aligned with the EU law in 2018 through the adoption of the law that implemented several EU regulations on organic production and labelling of organic products. However, the EU has since introduced a series of new legislative acts collectively known as the ‘new organic regulation’. This framework aims to enhance consumer trust in organic labelled products, improve state control mechanisms for organic production and trade, expand the categories of certifiable organic products, and tighten requirements for organic products imported from third countries to the EU member states. Currently, we are conducting thorough and systematic work to study and adopt the best European technologies and control mechanisms in the field of organic production and implement these practices in Ukraine. We take this opportunity to call for the coordinated efforts of all interested and committed professionals,” stated Sergii Zakharin.
